yes, the design and packaging is minimalist to the point of laziness, but the new lacquer cut of the original album sounds noticeably better than the previous versions (i have the EU clear vinyl, the aussie white vinyl, and used to have the original US clear vinyl). cut hotter, bigger soundstage, more controlled bass and all the appropriate midrange energy that the other LP cuts were sorely lacking. minor inner groove distortion but i can live with it, it's great to hear a record in 2023 cut the way people used to cut records.
the EP sides sound fine, not mindblowing. pretty sure the original EPs sound better but i haven't compared yet, and good luck finding 'sex EP' for normal prices now.
the optimal black vinyl pressing is quiet, and though it's disappointing that it's a standard weight pressing for $70, the end result matters most. the lack of artwork is annoying, and it's impossible to not crease the jacket - it's like the stereolab reissues from a few years ago, but with a wider spine/pocket and a matte coating.
listening setup: rega p6, ortofon mc cadenza bronze cartridge, stein music 'the perfect interface' carbon mat, liberty b2b-1 preamp, hegel h95 integrated amp, elac debut b5 speakers -

Diehard 1975 fan. Have all their collection, for a deeply intimate band who have a quite good relationship with the fanbase and love easter eggs/meta references this is a rather odd release.
Unfortunately this is largely a cash in, lets be honest.
Their last boxset was the lush 2nd album true boxset with photo book multiple 7" singles, clear vinyl double album and cd, heavyweight box and embossed cover. Mostly available at the price of 50 or under now. Around 100 at time of release.
This is low budget at best. Soft touch gatefold cover (ok, nice).
1 old photo on inner gatefold, nice but not particulsrly special. Otherwise standard text paper inners. Paper thin inners, so much so that all of the inners have got the vinyl outline already coming through visibly. No poster, no bonus tracks, no demos, no alternate live version (only release on cd for some unknown reason), no artwork or prints. Quite frankly no reason to call it an anniversary edition - there is nothing really to indicate it is commemorating an anniversary.
If you dont have the EP's and want the EP's with the original album then go for it. However id argue each of these EP's individually come with their own artwork (not featured in this set), most also with a code.
Still love the band, it plays fine but for £70+ absoloutley not worth it. -
Overall, this release is a bit mid.
The graphic design is very bland and lazy. There is only one photo in the whole thing... missed opportunity to use archival photos from self-titled era or at least print lyrics. The packaging for the OG self titled is much more visually engaging.
However, it is nice to have self-titled and the EPs all in one package, comparable with the "Deluxe" self-titled on digital platforms. As someone who has never owned the EPs separately, it's very exciting to have all of those songs on vinyl for the first time. This release is worth it if you don't have the EPs, but you are missing out on absolutely nothing if you already own s/t and the EPs. -

Edited one year agoNicely packaged with a gatefold and waxy texture to the cover. Apart from including the 4 records there is not much else for the price. A poster or some sort of insert would of gone a little further.
Sounds fantastic though and no sound pressing faults here. Unfortunately my G/H disc (second disc of the 1975 LP) is warped but playable. Anyone else suffer this? -
