Cowgirl and Mother Earth remain two standout hits in the album. Something about M.E. really sells that otherworldly vibe and just takes you to another place.

Bought the cassette version when I was still at school (for years I thought Surfboy was the relaxed bit at the end of Skyscraper). The obvious tracks immediately appealed to me but I didn't know what to do with the rest of it at the time. Over the years all the pieces gradually fell into place, I now know this lp backwards.
Dark & Long is a choice lp starter & in its best incarnation, Mmmm Skyscraper is as immense as the title suggests whilst Tongue reminds me of twilight dusty desert highways.
The one two punch of the emotionally wounded Dirty Epic & the twisting turns of Cowgirl used to leave me winded! Whilst the closing M.E is a footprint left on the beach, as an almost straight forward 80s lost balearic track!
Not entirely perfect, River of Bass, although pleasant enough, still outstays it's welcome.
Definitely a nocturnal listen, nice tuneful vocal touches & eccentric freeform wordplay at times. Heady chords, punchy, dense rhythms, rolling & washy synths & basslines, shimmering bleeps & dots.
These guys really were THE FELLAS back then! -
After hearing rave reviews on this, I unexpectedly heard a very housey album from an artist that I was used to hearing a more progressive sound from. Not really my style overall, but I can't sincerely deny that this album is excellent. Cowgirl easily being my favorite, this album includes a variety of different styles and sounds, and I applaud Underworld for such talent.
However, personally I'm not into this sound, and I didn't see much in a few of the songs. "Dirty Epic" includes male vocals that I didn't really feel were necessary or interesting, and some of the other tracks had a very lackadaisical atmosphere to it, not to the point of cheesiness, but still very awkward. I would have liked to see some more sadness and seriousness in this release.
One of the greatest electronic albums? Not really. Worth at least a listen or two? Definitely. I prefer the Dark & Long EP and the Rez/Cowgirl release to this album, and both of those are probably Underworld's strongest releases. -
Edited 18 years agoThis is a seminal album of the 90s as far as electronic dance music goes, not soon to be forgotten as it still sounds every bit as good today as it did 14 years ago. It should also be noted this is *NOT* Underworld's debut album (they released several unmentionables in the 80s); however, this is the first album from the then rejuvenated Underworld under the artistic/production direction of Darren Emerson who has sadly long left Underworld for a solo career and DJ stint.

Since I´ve listen to Underworld , live at Cologne. I love the Sound . This album featured 2 of the best Tracks from britain electronic scene.
Dark & Long is like the title dark electronic music with an long sound.
Cowgirl is full of energy , rhytm and cool synthsized sound areas . The power of Cowgirl is the step between , powerful text ages and instrumental sounds. One of my personally "All Time Classics". -
Mmm Underworld we love you. Saw this album for £2.99, no excuse for not investigating. Best £2.99 I ever spent, a marvellous album from beginning to end, with "Mmm Skyscaper I Love You", "Dirty Epic" "Cowgirl" and "M.E." being particularly brilliant, but there's nothing here that isn't at least very good. Doesn't that sound dated either.

Edited 24 years agoOne of the greatest debut releases ever by an electronic group. "Dark & Long" is Barry White for the techno set. "Cowgirl" is just a transcendent euphoric masterpiece of hard techno, and "Dirty Epic" is a dark and lascivious lonely ballad that meditates on the coldness of human relations in a technological age.
