Edited 2 months agoIce Cube is a veteran and I honestly find it difficult to slap anything he's made, but this album, again, doesn't make it easy, at least if you refer to the "old," angry Ice Cube, using the cover as a visual introduction. After a lyrically quite strong and substantial beginning, the whole thing unfortunately repeatedly falls into musical interchangeability, dragging on strangely and wearily. One track is even called "Bad Dope," and maybe it really has something to do with that, especially since Cube himself sounds comparatively lacking in energy and hunger, delivering a few modern mic mannerisms that I wasn't expecting. Listening to the man's early work... what a change. I actually found "Streets Shed Tears" quite good, as well as the Too Short feature "Ain't Got No Haters" and he really got me with the following "Can You Dig It?", with the funky beat and more bite, even if the constant references to the own history are starting to feel a bit overused. "That New Funkadelic"? No way – I've never liked his P-Funk-esque beats and approach anyway. Thankfully, he´s getting his act together again and the Flavor Flav sample on "Non Believers" crowns another quite strong track, the title track and the closer are similar ones, so the second disc salvages the album as an acceptable one for the loyal fan, even if it's not enough for one of the West Coast's deserving legends.
